Many educators inquire about the process for creating a website for their school. Here are some resources to help answer some questions.
Website Hosted by LAUSD.net
LAUSD provides space on its server for a web site for each school in the district. There is no web based configuration. The person creating the website will need to know html, ftp, and/or know how to use a web creation tool like Dreamweaver. This requires specialized knowledge.
According to this Bulletin (Attachment B), these are the steps to request a School Web site:
Principal e-mails the LAUSDnet Webmaster (webmaster@lausd.net) to request an application for space on
the WWW LAUSD web server.
Request must generate from an accepted LAUSD issued e-mail (lausd.net or lausd.k12.ca.us).
Sitemaster for school must be a fulltime District employee of the school requesting the web site.
Application must include two (2) active LAUSD e-mail accounts. (One must be the Principal’s e-mail).
Application must be signed by both the Principal and the designated Sitemaster for the school’s web site. It
is then faxed or mailed to the LAUSDnet District office.
Website Hosted Outside LAUSDnet
Schools may host their website outside of LAUSDnet servers. Please read Bulletin 2424 for details.
If a school will seek hosting outside of the LAUSDnet servers, there are several options and variations that can be used.
For Fee
Fully hosted and maintained content management system:
There are companies that provide hosting and management of websites for schools. Their prices are in the range of $3000 to $4000 per year. The benefit to this type of service is that all maintenance and support is handled by the company. All staff have the ability to publish information to the web using and easy to use web interface. The company that seems to be used by the majority of schools in our district is EducationalNetworks.
These websites are hosted on .mac accounts and are maintained by using easy to use web publishing software called iWeb that contains many templates. The cost for hosting the website on a .mac account is $100 per year. The person who maintains the website will need to have intermediate to advanced computer experience. In addition, a Mac and the iLife software are required.
TeacherWeb now has school templates, as well as classroom templates for every grade level - designed especially for educators. The fee is nominal. TeacherWeb has a page with sample school websites that also includes more information about school wide accounts here: http://www.teacherweb.com/integratedschoolsites.html
Easy web page creator with simple templates and one click layouts. A gmail account is required in order to create a Google Pages web site. Since G-mail is blocked at school, one must create the G-mail account when not behind the firewall. An account with the school name is preferable, since it will be part of the web address.
Weebly is a beautifully designed web page creator. Users can customize the look and feel by dragging and dropping images and other content. One drawback might be that since this site is new, it may not be around for long. The hope is that it will, because the site is well done.
Another place to host a free website, with online editing and many features.
